Hey u/DarkeKnight I assume this is the acer configuration that you are talking about I agree that would have been a great option, but since it is no longer going for 799 you have two options, either wait for it to be 799 again or you can go with this configuration of the Y520 my vote at the moment is to go with this one because it will not stay at this price for long and it is quite the catch 🙂

FX53VD-RS71 specs look good on paper but the screen is really not good. It’s the same type as the left side of this photo. ASUS banks on buyers not checking this spec, or not understanding just how much more noticeable this type of difference is compared to most other differences.

How do these look?

If you really want battery life, could get the Inspiron 7567 with another poor TN display and replace the display panel yourself. Dell hasn’t brought the IPS option on this laptop to Canada (they mostly only brought it to the US, which tbh isn’t a true fix for the issue), but the battery life on this model is rather good.

Go for this **Acer Aspire VX 15 Gaming Laptop** with the powerful 7th gen i5 quad core processor, 8 GB RAM, fast 256 GB SSD and of course, the solid GTX 1050 dedicated graphics card… In addition, it has a decent build quality and heat management and it’s display is good. It will run the above mentioned games very well and handle quickbooks and excel effortlessly.

I’ve been looking at this laptop. It’s right at the low end of your price range and has good reviews. https://www.amazon.ca/Acer-Notebook-i5-7300HQ-Windows-VX5-591G-5652/dp/B01N11JKA3/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1500300334&sr=8-3&keywords=acer

Looking for a laptop capable of gaming for college from $850 or lower

Posted on: July 18, 2017 by Michiganders

A decent all-around option would be the Acer VX15 for $800. It comes with a Quad Core i5 processor, 8gb of ram, 256gb SSD and a GTX 1050 dGPU. It also has a 6 hour advertised battery and a 1080p ips display. It isn’t quite as light as you’d probably like at 5.5 lbs though. You could also look into the Dell 7567 for a similar price for a better battery, but it’s even heavier at 5.8 lbs.

A cheaper option is the Asus M850 for $800 which also has a GTX 1050 and a quad core processor. The cooling probably won’t be quite as good, but it has a much more sleek appearance and weighs in at 5.1 lbs. It has a 47Wh battery which I’d expect to last around 5 or so hours of light use.

For something cheaper and even more portable, lenovo Ideapad 510s for $650. It comes with skylake i7, 8gb of ram, 256gb SSD and AMD R7 dedicated graphics. It should work fine for any light and moderate gaming, and could play Overwatch around mid settings with good FPS – it will struggle with more graphic intense games like Witcher 3 though. I’d expect it to only be playable on lowest possible settings. The battery isn’t nearly as good as the Envy 13 though. You can also look into a new version for $800 but the only improvement is a slightly faster processor, and it still has the same GPU.

If you’re looking for more suggestions or are interested in getting a better idea of options on the market, I suggest taking a look at my Laptop Suggestion Guide. Best of luck!

To get the most out of your budget, the Acer Aspire VX15 for $800 is a powerful machine for the price. Its a great gaming laptop with an IPS display and GTX 1050 dGPU, and at 15.6″ would be a good size for you. Inside it has an Intel Quad core i5-7300HQ processor, 8gb of ram, and a 256gb SSD. The display is a 1080p IPS display, weighing 5.5 lbs, with a 6 hr advertised battery life. It has a backlit keyboard as well.

This **Acer Aspire VX** would be a pretty good option thats within budget however its a little outside your weight restriction. it comes with a powerful:

* 7th Generation Intel Core i5-7300HQ Processor (Up to 3.5GHz) which is perfect for moderate gaming

* 15.6″ Full HD (1920 x 1080) widescreen IPS display for great viewing angles

* NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 with 4 GB of dedicated GDDR5 VRAM which will run your games on decent settings

* 8GB DDR4 Memory which is enough for gaming and multitasking

* 256GB SSD for quick boot up speeds

* HDD upgrade kit available (2.5” bracket with SATA and power cable).

Incoming college freshman.

The specs of these do look good and I can see why they initially look like good values. However both use low quality TN displays with poor contrast and viewing angles, which isn’t very good once you start to get into this price bracket I would say. Like the left side of this photo.

With a hard budget of $800 I would try to get a decent GPU and a decent display at the same time. You can get that with these (/u/ImTonay)

Acer Aspire VX5-591G (Edit: whoops, fixed link)
– Refurb Dell 7567 w/ IPS. Go to the Dell Outlet and look for the ones that mention IPS. There should be a $769 one with the 1050 Ti, 256GB SSD, and IPS display. Also a new one for $809.
– If you’re willing to do a DIY display replacement, could go with one of the LQTN Inspirons and replace the display with one of these. Works on the i5577, i7567 as well as many other models from various companies. This one is a bit better than the Acer VX5 or i7567 IPS, but is more effort.
– Edit: If you can get free or discounted Windows 10 through your school, you could get a Clevo N855HJ within budget. Pick the “**IPS**” display on top (I wouldn’t buy without that unless you’re going to do a DIY replacement for the slightly better one, it’s the same issue), and leave the OS selection at None so you can install your own copy. $774 and that’s with no SSD; $839 if you add the 250GB M.2 SSD and remove the HDD.

My best suggestion would be the Acer VX15 for $800. It has some of the best specs you’ll find in your price range and will work incredibly well for most gaming. It comes with a Quad Core Kaby Lake processor, 8gb of ram, 256gb SSD and a GTX 1050 dGPU. It also has a 1080p IPS display, and a pretty solid build quality. I really think this is your best option, and dropping to get something a bit below this won’t have as good of value for its price.

Well I am going to make this short for better screen and build quality this is your better option, for better battery life this is your better option, if you can push your budget more you can get the Dell from Dell’s website with the IPS and 1050 or 1050Ti, that would be the best all around laptop for your budget, but it will cost more than the budget.

* 7th Gen Intel Core i5,
* NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050,
* 15.6 Full HD,
* 8GB DDR4,
* 256GB SSD

The powerful processor and graphics card can get you the gaming experience that you want and you will be able to enjoy the gaming experience on an IPS screen. The battery life is pretty decent as well. You can add an HDD later on if you need more space

* NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 with 4 GB of dedicated GDDR5 VRAM
* 8GB DDR4 Memory,

This is a powerful low budget gaming laptop with an IPS display that will give you a wide viewing angle. The GTX 1050 graphics card is a rare sight at this price point and the processor is equally as powerful. If you want more storage you can always add an HDD

[SQ] $800 laptop too good to be true?

Using it for gaming? You can get a better GPU with this: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-Gaming-GeForce-VX5-591G-5652/dp/B01N11JKA3/

– https://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-960M.138006.0.html
– https://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-1050-Notebook.178614.0.html
– 960M vs 1050 means more than “i5” vs “i7” for games, in most cases. These are both HQ series CPUs that I would say should both be called “i7” anyway. I think Intel sells this CPU short by calling it “i5”, meanwhile they confusingly brand some considerably less fast U-series chips as “i7”.

Better battery life and an even better GPU with this if you go $899: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/dell-inspiron-15-6-laptop-intel-core-i5-8gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1050-ti-256gb-solid-state-drive-black/5872507.p

– There’s $799 one but it’s stuck with the default/original low quality TN display with no option to upgrade. I would go $899 for this one if you like this laptop. Likewise the MSI GL62M, ASUS FX53VD, and a number of other GTX 1050/Ti laptops (listed in the sidebar) have similarly poor displays.

Will a gtx 1050 be enough for me?

Posted on: June 16, 2017 by edit1754

Yeah that one uses a low quality TN display with poor contrast and viewing angles (like what used to be the only option on the 7567), so I generally don’t recommend it unless you plan to replace the LCD.

This one has IPS and a GTX 1050 for $799: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-Gaming-GeForce-VX5-591G-5652/dp/B01N11JKA3/

Or you could opt to grab a particularly cheap refurb Inspiron 7567 from the Dell Outlet with the LQTN display, and use the saved budget to replace it yourself.

Lots of options I think are better than the 5577.

My two best suggestions would be the Acer VX 15 for $800 if you prefer an SSD or the Prostar Clevo for $800 if you prefer an HDD (although bough have another storage slot to increase storage). They both have a pretty solid build quality and otherwise identical specs with a kaby lake quad core processor, 8gb of ram, and a GTX 1050 dGPU. They are both an excellent value and easily can run games at near-max settings.

The keyboard on the Dell Inspiron is essentially a full size keyboard, so I’m not sure why you had a problem. In general, the keyboard on the Dell Inspiron is pretty poor though and it’s really mushy compared to competitive laptops.

Maybe look into something like the Acer Aspire X15 for $800 which is known to have a slightly better keyboard. It has pretty identical specs, and a bit better value. It comes with powerful specs that will work fine for gaming, a 1080p IPS display, and a decent battery.

For more suggestions you can look at my list here but to find something that you like I’d try looking up user reviews on the keyboard to ensure you find something you’ll like.

You will need some decent decent performance power for what you do and if this laptop should be performing well several years from now. I understand that you would want a professional looking laptop, but what if this Acer Aspire VX 15 Gaming Laptop would offer the best specs within your budget ? I am actually telling you that it is the best performer and it’s battery life is not bad at all..It has a powerful quad core 7th gen i5 processor, 8 GB RAM, a fast 256 GB SSD and a powerful gtx 1050 graphics card.. In addition, it has a very good build quality, decent heat management and display quality is good.

This laptop will do the tasks you mentioned above very well and would give you the best shot at having it for 4+ years in that budget.

Basically, I recommend you get a quad core processor- preferably an i5 or i7, 8 GB RAM or more and you will need a dedicated graphics card. Would you be afraid of a laptop that looks like this Acer Aspire VX 15 Gaming Laptop? If not, it would be a great pick for you.. Has a new and powerful i5 quad core processor, 8 GB RAM, powerful gtx 1050 graphics card..It also has a decent battery life, handles heat pretty well and has a good quality screen.It’s build quality is very good.

Maybe this?

Does higher resolution screen have a negative effect on performance? (SSD+i5+1080 vs. HDD+i7+"4K")

I would recommend neither, for 800 budget I would recommend either Acer 15 or the PROSTAR Clevo Gaming Laptop N855HJ because both comes with everything you need , quad core CPU (either i5 or i7 CPU) which is one of the best in the market and great for your usage, 8 GB of ram for smooth multitasking, Good SSD storage of 256 GB for faster boot up and loading(with the acer), 1 TB of HDD for storage(with the prostar), Full HD screen which is a must have for this price range, high build quality, very good heat management, somewhat decent battery life, 1050 GPU that should be able to handle the games you mentioned on medium to high settings with very good FPs, and it is within your budget.

For video editing we recommend quad core CPU and powerful GPU so I would recommend this Acer vx because it comes with everything you need , i5 quad core CPU which is one of the best in the market and great for gaming, 8 GB of ram for smooth multitasking, Good SSD storage of 256 GB for faster boot up and loading, Full HD screen which is a must have for this price range, high build quality, 1050 GPU that can handle video editing with no issues, and it is within your budget.

There is also the Asus K550 comes with better CPU but weaker GPU and lower build quality.

[Canada] Suggestion for a good/portable laptop with a good screen (not those crappy dell HD LED screens) for school work, but powerful enough to to play games like Civ 6. Budget ~1100-1200 taxes included.

Well guess what I’m searching exactly the same thing. I’ve already searched some ideas and I found (link for specs included):

* Acer VX 15
* MSI GL62M
* Gigabyte Saber 15 (a bit off budget)

Hope that’ll help!

The cooling of neither the Inspiron nor the Pavilion is extremely terrible.. People tend to just have a simple look at a laptop and see where the vents are and assume that this equates to poor cooling..In that budget though, why not go for this **Acer Aspire VX 15 Gaming Laptop** which has a much better cooling than both the inspiron and Pavillion and of course, it has the GTX 1050 graphics card that outperforms the Gtx 960m in the Dell easily,

I would go with this Acer VX if you want a very good balance between specs, build quality and price and if you want value for money then I would go with this MSI because it comes with a more powerful GPU but lower quality screen, both are under 800.

I am not sure if you are saying that your budget is 800-900 USD or that you can’t go up to that number, if that is your budget then if you want higher gaming performance I would go with this Acer VX and if you want value for money then I would go with this MSI because it comes with a more powerful GPU but lower quality screen, both are under 800 and both is capable to run Dark Souls on mediums settings with higher FPs than 30.

This would be a better option. Stronger CPU and GPU, nicer display.

These three have good GPUs, and don’t have the display quality issues a handful of laptops this price range have.

I might instead side with something that has a GTX 1050. Can you spend a little more for this?

which is better for gaming ?

Posted on: March 31, 2017 by edit1754

The GL62 I think uses a low quality display, and also not the best GPU for the price. That isn’t the model I would pick at a $799 budget. Do you have to buy from this site? If not, I’d consider:

– http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np5855-clevo-n855hj.html (pick the IPS panel [+$45]. The stock/default screen is also very low quality. IMO low quailty displays shouldn’t be a possibility at this budget in the first place, since it means extra effort in avoiding them, but at least they provide the option for a decent one. Also select an OS.)

Yup you’re right. The one I am looking at has the IPS screen so no worries there.

I think I am going to pull the trigger on this version of the laptop:

https://shopineer.com/laptops/Acer-Aspire-VX-15-Gaming-Laptop-7th-Gen-Intel-Core-i5-NVIDIA-VX5-591G-5652

Debating whether or not I should spend the extra 100 bucks to upgrade to the 1050 Ti card. For my purposes I don’t think I need it but it wouldn’t hurt to have I guess?

Which would you choose?

Posted on: March 30, 2017 by Orangematz

Those all seem to have TN panels. Not very good.

Instead, I’d go with this.

Good laptop with ssd and i5 or better for school and light gaming.

Posted on: March 30, 2017 by edit1754

Sadly I don’t think it’s available there. I misread your post thinking it meant you could buy from both US and Canada. But converting $700 USD to CAD…

Could get this: https://www.amazon.ca/Acer-15-6-Inch-Notebook-i5-6300HQ-VN7-592G-52Z4/dp/B01HEML5BY/

Then add an SSD into the M.2 slot and reinstall Windows on it.

Or this which comes with a 256GB SSD and no HDD. https://www.amazon.ca/Acer-NH-GM2AA-001-VX5-591G-5652-Notebook-Windows/dp/B01N11JKA3/

Other differences:

– VX5 has a faster GTX 1050 GPU. VN7 has a GTX 960M.
– VN7 has a slightly better screen: 72% NTSC color gamut IPS, same as the ZX53VW. The VX5 has a 45% NTSC gamut IPS. Still better than the one in the laptop I mentioned I didn’t recommend.
– VN7 has a less-flashy look.

for 700 you will get 960M GPU, but if you can push it to 800 then I would recommend this Acer Aspire VX 15 because it comes with everything you need , i5 quad core CPU which is one of the best in the market and great for gaming, 8 GB of ram for smooth multitasking, Good SSD storage of 256 GB for faster boot up and loading, Full HD IPS screen which is a must have for this price range, 1050 GPU that should be able to handle the games you mentioned on high settings with very good FPs (and much more powerful than a 960M, and it is within your budget.

Thoughts on this ASUS, gtx 1050, i7 8gb ddr4?

Posted on: March 19, 2017 by edit1754

It might use a low quality TN display. I can’t find definitive info, but ASUS has a poor track record for display quality on their “FX” line.

This one uses the same GPU but is known to use a good display: https://www.amazon.ca/Acer-NH-GM2AA-001-VX5-591G-5652-Notebook-Windows/dp/B01N11JKA3/

Asus GL753VD-DS71 vs. MSI GL62M 7RD-218CA

Posted on: February 27, 2017 by edit1754

That GL62M uses MSI’s “Vivid Color 94%” display, a low-quality TN display, and as such I tend not to recommend it.

Not 100% sure when this one will be in stock, but if you want 15.6″, maybe this one? https://www.amazon.ca/Acer-NH-GM2AA-001-VX5-591G-5652-Notebook-Windows/dp/B01N11JKA3/

Asus laptop open box deal for light gaming & college : worth it ?

Posted on: February 18, 2017 by edit1754

I tend not to recommend this laptop, since the display is low quality in a noticeable way (‘washed-out’ look and poor viewing angles). I think the difference between a good display and a not-so-good one can be one of the most noticeable things, and in particular for gaming I think you’ll find lower settings on a good display to look better than higher settings on a not-so-good display.

Shopineer’s Acer Nitro suggestion comes with a great display and the same GPU.

For a faster GTX 1050 GPU there’s this: https://www.amazon.ca/Acer-NH-GM2AA-001-VX5-591G-5652-Notebook-Windows/dp/B01N11JKA3/ (not as good quality as the Nitro but a good bit better than the K501UX)

Also as far as GTX 1050 laptops go, in case it comes up in your searches, I would suggest to avoid Dell’s new Inspiron 7567, as the display quality is also poor.

Need help buying a gaming laptop to play wow:legion at max setting for 700-1000$CAD max

Posted on: February 12, 2017 by edit1754

I would read this before buying the Inspiron 7567.

Looks like it’s already been discussed in the the thread, but perhaps not to the fullest extent. For example IMO the comparison to a matte phone screen protector isn’t the best, since there are a lot of matte laptop displays that are quite nice.

EDIT: These have the GTX 1050 / Ti alongside a considerably better quality display:
