this is a great option already for the price point but if you want other options then this configuration is better it comes with better CPU/iGPU (6200 vs 7200, HD 520 vs HD620) and for 20 or less, any lower than that you will start to go to refurbished options.

Hey u/Cthrus I would recommend either this Acer Spin 5 or this Acer Swift both comes with i5 dual core CPU which is one of the best in the market, 8 GB of ram for smooth multitasking, Good SSD storage of 256 GB for faster boot up and loading, Full HD IPS screen which is a must have for this price range, high build quality, very good battery life, and both within your budget

The Spin has a smaller screen with multi touch support with 2 in 1 feature and light at 3.53 lbs, and the Swift comes with bigger screen, and lighter at 3.31 lbs with better iGPU (if you plan do some light gaming this would be a better option), between the two it is just a matter of reference.

I’m thinking that the XPS 13 would be perfect for you. Great build quality, great battery life, and it’s the right size. The HD 620 iGPU in the lower tier models should be able to give you close to 60FPS on Medium settings according to NotebookCheck.. Here’s a video of the someone testing Sims 4 on medium on the exact specs and it’s running great at medium.

If I were you, I’d go for the i5-7200U version, but the i3-7100U would be fine. You may also consider upgrading the 128GB SSD to 256 for 100$ more on Dell’s website. That would put you anywhere between $791 for the i3 and 128GB SSD to $1089 for the i5 and 256 SSD.

The XPS 13 really is top of the line in its class though, and that is reflected in its price. There are budget options that can take care of your duties for cheaper.

* Acer Spin 5 – 13 inches, same specs, $589, but has touch screen

* Asus Zenbook UX 330UA – Same shit, except no touch screen, slightly better build, and $699.

The XPS is *nicer,* but it’s not inherently better. I’d be tempted by the Acer and Asus if I’m being honest. Same specs and can be had for cheaper.

Nitpicking, but what you called “memory” isn’t SSD, memory is RAM while SSD & HD are storage, the ‘red button’ is trackpoint or any other name. Kinda prudent to know more about computer if you’re going to code for it.

For programming you want as much memory as you can get. The 8GB of Swift 3 as recommended by /u/edit1754 should be enough for early course, unfortunately its RAM is soldered without additional slot to upgrade. Chrome is lightweight in RAM usage when compared to IDEs, webserver and VMs.

Acer Spin 5 is bit smaller (13″ despite the name), same price with Swift 3 (14″), with upgradeable RAM & storage and otherwise specs. You can grab it now, upgrade to 16 GB in later semester when you need it.

I wouldn’t recommend the Lenovo for school because of two things, first weight, 4.8 lbs is too much IMO to be carrying around on a daily basis for what might be hours on end, second it comes with lower res screen which is below standard even for this budget, I would suggest this Acer 5 because sometimes it goes on a deal for 499.99 so if you are not in a rush you can keep your eye on it until it drops, if you can’t wait then this lower config of it would be another good option, however it does come with 4 GB of ram only and we are not sure if it is upgradeable or not, or if you are ok with refurbished?(better value for money that way) then this would be another good option because it has double the specs of the lower configured acer.

College Laptop Under $500

Getting a quad core for this size and budget is very unlikely, this Acer 5 sometimes goes on a deal for 499.99 so if you are not in a rush you can keep your eye on it until it drops, if you can’t wait then this lower config of it matches a lot of your criteria, like “A SSD and at least Intel i3, 500 or less, 13-14 inches, under 4-5 lbs” so it is a very good contender, or if you are ok with refurbished?(better value for money that way) then this would be another good option because it has double the specs of the lower configured acer.
